September 5, 2008, Newsletter Issue #298: Saving A Knocked-Out Tooth
1
Tip of the Week
Kids will be kids and this means there will be accidents. Sometimes these accidents involve the unexpected loss of a tooth. If your child gets a tooth knocked out, Leif K. Bakland, D.D.S., of the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry recommends the following:
1) Soak the tooth in milk. Milk keeps the tooth vital for several hours by preventing dehydration and infection. (Water is absorbed too quickly, causing the tooth cells to burst).
2) Milk you donīt have to refrigerate before opening works best.
3) The next best milks, in order, are skim, low-fat, and whole milk.
4) More important than getting the tooth in milk is getting the tooth and your child to a dentist. The quicker you get both to the dentist, the better chances of the tooth being successfully re-implanted in your childīs mouth.
