April 17, 2009, Newsletter Issue #329: Moving To A New City
1
Tip of the Week
Parents tend to view moving to another city quite differently than children and adolescents do. For adults, moving may be the exciting start of a higher paying job, a nicer house, a bigger city. Yet for young people, a geographical relocation to another city can be devastating event. Loss of longtime friends, school, and neighborhood -- maybe even the only life they have ever known -- can seem overwhelming or sad to them.
If your family is expecting to relocate to another city, here are a few Good Parenting Action Points to help your children deal with the situation:
- Include your children in the packing, making sure they see the moving van arrive and depart. The change can feel less threatening when they are allowed to participate.
- Give your children a special box in which they can collect and store special mementos -- from inside and outside the house they are leaving.
- Give them a disposable camera so they can take pictures of friends and places dear to them.
