When emotions get stirred, people tend to say and do things they later regret. It is important not to respond out of your own emotions when you feel under attack. That could be just exactly what the other person is hoping for in order to give them ammunition to use against you. Refuse to play that game. Many times when a person feels bad about themselves they will respond by trying to put the other person down to make themselves look better.
