There is something about being a part of an activity that creates a connection to the finished product. Let them help wash the fresh broccoli and chop it for the salad or casserole, or peel potatoes with a potato peeler (not a knife to avoid injuries). They will be more inclined to tasting it than they would if it were just simply put on their plate and they were told to eat it.
